The city

Beyond the Colosseum: the Rome of the Romans.

You can visit Rome in three days and still not know it after a lifetime. The problem isn't finding somewhere to eat — it's finding the right place, among thousands of spots built for people who'll only pass through once. Rankings reward whoever has the most reviews, not whoever makes the best carbonara. On BeLocal, instead, every place comes with a photo and a couple of lines written by someone who actually knows it.

The real Trastevere.

Behind the postcard-perfect spots, the neighbourhood the community actually saves is still there. On the Lungotevere, L'Oratorio Trastevere is the place for a great night out. At Otaleg, on via di San Cosimato, the verdict on the gelato is clear: mango, 10/10. And at Checco Er Carettiere you go for the full Roman menu — amatriciana, cacio e pepe, carbonara, abbacchio, puntarelle — with above-average prices, but worth every cent.

North Rome, where the community feels at home.

Between Trieste, Parioli and Flaminio you find the everyday Rome — the one with corner bars and dinners among friends. Marzapane, on via Flaminia, is amazing, both the sweet and savoury stuff, but you can't book and there's always a huge line: better to get there early, or practically the whole menu's gone. At Enoteca Grado, on via Alessandria, everything is soooo good, from the small bites to the pistachio dessert. La Casa del Cremolato, on via di Priscilla, is for some hands down the best gelateria in the world, and the cremolato is even better than the gelato. At Paco Bistrot, on viale Parioli, every pizza is recommended, and Paco's way too nice. At Treebar it's always great to go back — beer, 10/10, and Salotto Trieste is a sure thing.

Centro, Monti and Prati, no tourist traps.

Even steps from the monuments there are places the community stands behind. For some, Roscioli, on via dei Chiavari, makes the best pizza in the world. In Monti, at Urbana 47, there's just one comment: I'm about to burst, but so good. In Prati, Osteria della Parola really is as good as they say. And if you're out late, the Sunseri's diner on viale Ippocrate is great as a 3am dinner, if you didn't manage to eat at work.

Why a friend beats a ranking.

None of these recommendations is an anonymous rating. It's the people you follow who tell you where it's worth the queue and where it isn't, what to order and when to go — and the recommendations the community rates most are the ones you'll find here. Follow people who know Rome, and their map becomes yours too.
